The Oldest Kashmiri Poetry — The Vaakhs of Lalleshwari
Lalleshwari, or Lal Dyad, a female Kashmiri mystic, who is said to have influenced Sheikh-ul-Alam, is also responsible for the composition of the very first literature in her language, a language that now the majority of Jammu and Kashmir speaks.
This is a Vaakh of hers, which represents the original, secular aspect of Kashmir, the one of many ideologies together known as Kashmiriyat:-
Śiva čhu thāli thāli rozān
Mo zān Hyond tụ Musalmān
Truk ay čhuk pān panun parzanāv,
Soy čhay Sahivas sati zāniy zān.
Siva pervades every place and thing;
Do not differentiate between Hindu and Musalman.
you art intelligent recognise thine own self;
That is the true acquaintance with God.
